Let’s face it: London isn’t exactly the cheapest city in the world, especially when it comes to nightlife and clubbing. So if you’re tight on cash but still want to make the most out of your visit to London, you’re going to have to be extra careful to not put a huge dent in your bank account.
Whether you’re planning on partying it up in expensive neighbourhoods like Soho, Chelsea, or Leicester Square, or even if you plan on staying in London for a lengthy period of time and want to get the most bang for you buck, here are some tips on how you can save money during a fun night out in London:
Get knowledgeable on London’s neighbourhoods
Saving money on drinks means more than just avoiding the touristy areas, it also means sticking to areas that are known to be a tad on the cheaper side.
Generally speaking, Shoreditch tends to be the cheapest area when it comes to nightlife in London, while Piccadilly, Leicester Square, Soho and Chelsea tend to be the most expensive.
The early bird gets the deals
Cover charges can be a nightmare when you’re planning a night out in London, so if you can try to enter a bar or club before 10 p.m. or even 9 p.m., you can easily avoid cover charges altogether.
If worse comes to worse, you can also stick to bars that don’t charge entry at all, such as the Jam Tree in Clapham, or the 12 Bar Club in Covent Garden (which allows you to get in free before 11 p.m.).
Pre-drink at a pub
Depending on the neighbourhood, pubs tend to be a lot cheaper than bars or clubs, and you can easily pay for a pint for as little as £2 or less if you’re lucky.
Sam Smith pubs tend to be the cheapest options (luckily there are over 40 of them scattered all around London), and you can always have a drink at a Wetherspoons chain as well.
Give a little Facebook “Like”
If you know which bar or club you plan on going to, then why not check out their Facebook page to see what deals they are offering? Most of the time venues in London offer discount vouchers specifically for their Facebook fans, and you can even message them directly to see if you can get on their guest list as well.
If you don’t use Facebook, then download the DrinkOwl app on your mobile to check out other deals, discounts and vouchers at different bars and clubs in London.
Hop on those Happy Hours
This should be a given, but if you’re truly strapped for cash it may be a good idea to only visit bars and clubs in London during their Happy Hours.
Bars like Tiger Tiger and Zoo Bar in Leicester Square offer 50% off on all their drinks between 5 pm. and 9 p.m. everyday, while the Verve (near the Zoo) has a Happy Hour between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Bison and Bird in Clapham offers two-for-one cocktails as well as jugs of cocktails for £8.90 everyday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as well.
Avoid partying on the weekend
And last, but certainly not least, if you really want to cut down on your nightlife costs while partying it up in London, avoid going out on the weekends altogether.
Generally speaking, Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be the cheapest nights when it comes to nightlife in London, but if you really want to party it up in a big crowd, Thursday nights are also a good option as well.
